Dealing with car issues while out on the road is never a fun experience. Whether you are involved in an accident or have broken down and awaiting roadside assistance, there are various roadway risks to be aware of.

Not taking the right precaution while dealing with vehicle issues on the road could result in serious injury or even death, giving even more reason to be fully aware of the risks and prepare for a breakdown or accident.

Here are 5 ways to keep your family safe from any further roadway risks:

1. Stop somewhere safe if possible

If you are concerned that your car is about to break down for whatever reason, always try to slow down and find a safe location to stop. Highways are often problematic for stopping, especially if there’s no nearby exit, in which case you need to slow down and stop on the shoulder.

When stopping on a highway, always make sure you have put the hazard lights on and you’ve parked as close the right side of the road as possible, keeping the wheels turned towards the right too.

2. Never stand on the road

This is one of the biggest risks for a driver waiting for help, so never make the mistake of waiting right next to the vehicle on the road. Only once it’s safe to exit, you should leave the vehicle and stand off the road by a good distance.

If possible, get behind any roadside barriers to offer more protection, as you never know what could accidentally collide with you on the road. Also, only ever leave the vehicle if it is 100% safe for you and your family – otherwise, stay inside with your seatbelt fastened and wait for help.

3. Determine whether you need assistance

Some people are able to complete minor repairs by themselves, but this isn’t always the safest route to take, even if you’re well versed with vehicle repairs. The main issue is that you don’t know the true extent of the problem with your vehicle, which means it could be risky to attempt roadside repairs if you’re unsure of the issue.

So, unless you are certain that you can complete the repairs by yourself (and remain safe as you do them) then never take the risk – call for roadside assistance or a tow truck.

4. Always drive prepared

If you travel a lot with your family, then it makes sense to be prepared for a roadside emergency. Having a medical kit in your car is always recommended in case you are ever involved in an auto accident, which should include water, blankets, spare food, and some tools if possible.

We at Melbourne Towing Guys strongly promote and encourage safe driving. We also know that sometimes things go wrong and you may need roadside assistance in the future.
