History of Eley Park Tennis Club
Eley Park Tennis Club was created in the year 2011 as a result of a successful merger with Blackburn South Tennis Cluband Bennettswood Tennis Club.
Blackburn South Tennis Club was formed in 1967. Three courts were constructed , and an unfinished shed was used for the purpose of a clubhouse. In the beginning, another five courts were built , and the clubhouse is completed. The club in its peak had more than 700 members. In the year 1980, the night tennis tournament was established and quickly was an integral part for the members. As the sport developed, Saturday and Sunday weekend retail trading tennis was reduced, and so did the number of members. However, the rise in night tennis allowed the club to stay healthy financially and keep membership numbers.
Bennettswood Tennis Club founded in the year 1966 with courts that were being utilized within Cornell St. Camberwell. Bennettswood was established in 1966. Bennettswood site, located on Burwood Highway built in 1969, with four courts as well as the building of the clubhouse. Then, three courts were added to the site, creating seven porous courts. The lighting on the court was thought to be a possibility in the 1980’sbut objections from neighbours stopped the project and may have had an impact on the likely growth of the membership of the club. The growth of Deakin University also resulted in several of the houses located in this area becoming converted into student rental apartments. However, junior and family membership were not very well received.

The connection among Blackburn South and Bennettswood Tennis Clubs has been strong for a long time Both clubs were founded in the 1960s , and both had the same values. The two clubs attended social events, held joint tournaments and played across teams. The prolonged drought of the year 2000 had severe consequences for the facilities that were getting older in both Clubs. The Committees at both clubs recognized their own limitations in the long-term viability (with old facilities at the club) and saw an opportunity to revitalize their Eley Park tennis precinct. The committees from each club joined forces with the City of Whitehorse in 2007. City of Whitehorse with a joint plan to create a long-term sustainable, community-based tennis facility.
In determining the goals and priorities of the clubs and creating the clubs “vision for the future” that included a five-year strategy for business, clubs submitted an idea to the City of Whitehorse to join forces, transfer the property on Burwood Highway to the community, and then redevelop their Eley Park site. With the help of Tennis Australia and the evident enthusiasm, commitment, and financial investments of both clubs The Council supported the plan with two grants for the improvement of courts, lighting , and fences at Eley Park. In the course of 12 months from 2010-11 eight courts were transformed into Super Ace synthetic grass.
